Greater Rhea (Rhea americana)

There were four sightings of this species in the Cerrado. Footprints were
regularly found along the sand tracks in this area. The highest count was on May
1st where 9 birds (groups of 6 and 3) in total were seen.

Tataupa Tinamou (Crypturellus tataupa)

A species that was present on the reserve and was heard around dawn and
dusk in the Atlantic Forest. A nest containing four eggs was found by the
forest guards in the North forest. Camera traps were installed on March 15th
to monitor activity at the nest. A Crab eating fox found the nest and consumed
the eggs resulting in the nest being abandoned by the adult.
Single birds were disturbed during bird Census work in the Cerrado. Two
birds were seen in the Cerrado on April 28th.
Highest counts were on February 20th and March 4th
where 3 individuals were heard in the Atlantic Forest.
Red-winged Tinamou (Rhynchotus rufescens)
This species was only seen when flushed whilst walking through areas of
scrub and within Plantations.’
There were five sightings, four of which were single birds that were
flushed during bird census work in the Plantations and Cerrado.
The first sighting was on April 19th on the dried riverbed
behind Nightjar land. In the Plantations single birds were flushed on April 26th,30th
and May 2nd and a single bird was flushed in the Cerrado on April 26th.
Spotted Nothura (Nothura maculosa)
This species was seen around dusk and dawn near the edge of tracks in the
Cerrado and the Transitional forest.

Pied-billed Grebe (Podilymbus podiceps)

A single bird was observed almost daily on the Lagoon from February 13th.
A second bird arrived on February 20th following a storm. On March
18th and 19th numbers increased to 3 birds. A pair
remained from March 20th in the area of reeds at the beach end of
the Lagoon.

This species was a regular visitor to the lagoon. Large groups were
observed after stormy weather. The highest count was on March 25th

On February 19th a single bird was found by Adam Moltzhan in
the reed-bed by the beach area of the lagoon. This bird remained that afternoon.

This species was an infrequent visitor to the lagoon. On April 5th
3 birds were seen in flight from the stream at the back of Nightjar land.

Great White Egret (Ardea alba)
This species was most commonly seen in flight over the Lagoon. On
February 16th a group of 30 birds spent a day at the NE end of the
lagoon. On March 24th 24 birds were seen in flight over Nightjar
land. The highest count was on April 16th where a flock of 63 birds
were seen in flight over the Lagoon.

This species was a rare visitor to the reserve even though there is a
large cattle ranch NE of Laguna Blanca. On March 15th 45 birds were
observed flying low over the Lagoon.

area of the Lagoon. Both birds flew off SE. This was the first record of this

On March 13th a single bird was seen in flight over the Lagoon

This species is most common in marshlands. Sightings at Laguna Blanca
were rare.
On February 16th a single bird was photographed flying over
the Atlantic forest.
On February 17th a single bird was seen in flight over the
Atlantic forest.
On March 17th a single bird was photographed in flight over
the Lagoon.
On March 18th a single bird was noted flying over the marsh at
area at Bridge 3.
On May 3rd a single bird was recorded in flight over the Mbopi
trail.

This species was seen on three occasions in March. These were the first
records of this species at Laguna Blanca.
On March 27th a single bird was photographed in flight over

Swallow-tailed Kite (Elanoides forficatus)
Pearl Kite (Gampsonyx swainsonii)
This raptor was seen in flight on three occasions in March.
On March 5th a single bird was observed in flight over the
Atlantic forest.
On March 8th a single bird was observed in flight over Nightjar
land.
On March 27th a single bird was observed in flight over the Lagoon.
Plumbeous Kite (Ictinia plumbea)
There was a single sighting of this species on March 27th
where a single bird was noted flying NW over the Base. (SS/KG)
Mississippi Kite (Ictinia mississippiensis)

There were four sightings of this species in migratory flocks.
On February 24th a flock of circa 12 birds were noted over the
Lagoon.
On February 25th a small flock of 5 birds were seen over the Lagoon.
On March 3rd 3 birds were seen over the Lagoon.
On March 8th circa 20 birds were observed early morning
kettling over the Lagoon.
Long-winged Harrier (Circus buffoni)

There were three sightings of this species on the reserve.
On February 20th a single bird was observed in flight over the
Lagoon.
On March 8th an immature bird was photographed in flight over
Nightjar land.
On March 24th an adult male was photographed in flight over Nightjar
land.
Savanna Hawk (Buteogallus meridionalis)

There were six sightings of this species on the reserve.
On February 22nd a single bird was observed in flight over the
Cerrado.
On March 11th a juvenile was found grounded inside the Transitional
forest. (HP/KG) This individual was found dead a few days later. This bird was
recovered and dissected and the cause of death was diagnosed as mal nutrition.
The specimen was preserved and stuffed by Helen Pheasey and now takes pride and
place in the Laguna Blanca Museum.
On March 17th an adult was seen on Nightjar land.
On March 28th a single bird was observed in flight over the
Cerrado.
On April 8th a sub adult bird was photographed on Nightjar
land.
On April 18th a single bird was seen in flight over the
Atlantic forest.
Roadside Hawk (Rupornis magnirostris)

the environs of the Bas lagoon and the clearing along the Urukurea trail.

A pair of this species was often seen on Nightjar land suggesting that
there may have been a nest in the surrounding area.
On March 24th a single bird was observed on Nightjar land.
On April 3rd a pair was observed on Nightjar land.
On April 5th a pair was observed one of which was photographed
on Nightjar land. A pair was also noted in the Cerrado by the same observers.
On April 8th a pair was observed on Nightjar land.
On April 19th a single bird was observed on Nightjar land.
On April 23rd a single bird was seen in flight in the Cerrado.

This species was photographed by a visitor to Laguna Blanca prior to it
being seen on March 28th on the Arroyito trail. The bird was
observed only long enough for photographs to be taken before the bird flew off
and was not relocated. (KG/SG)
Collared Forest Falcon (Micrastur semitorquatus)
On April 15th and 16th 2 birds one an adult visited
a salt lick in the North Atlantic Forest. A camera trap was set up at a salt
lick and photographed the visitors to it. (VP)
American Kestrel (Falco sparverius)
This species was resident in the Cerrado and Nightjar land. The highest
count was on April 9th where 5 birds were observed in the Cerrado.
Aplomado Falcon (Falco femoralis)
This species was most regularly seen in April in the Cerrado &
Nightjar land. The highest counts were on April 5th, 8th, and 24th where 2 birds were noted.

Rusty-margined Guan (Penelope superciliaris)
This species is usually heard and is difficult to see. There were 5
records of this bird during April. A small group spent time in the vicinity of
the Base & were photographed by Sean Gee as they moved between the Arroyito
and Mbopi trails.
On April 4th a single bird was heard in the Atlantic Forest
close to dusk.
On April 21st a single bird was heard in the Eucalyptus
Plantation.
On April 22nd a group of 3 birds were seen on the edge of the
Atlantic Forest.
On April 25th 2 birds were photographed at the Base by Sean
Gee.
On April 28th 2 birds were seen on the Arroyito trail close to
the Base.

Slaty-breasted Wood-rail
This species is present but rarely seen on the reserve.
On April 29th a single bird was seen crossing the dirt road disappearing
into the Atlantic Forest. (KG)
This species was resident in the reed-beds surrounding the Lagoon.
Individuals were heard at dawn and dusk. On March 25th 2 birds were
observed from a boat in the reed margins. The highest counts were 3 calling
birds between April 16th and 28th.

Red-legged Seriema (Cariama cristata)
This species was seen in the Cerrado using vehicle tracks to move between
areas. The highest count was on April 19th when a group of 4 birds
were seen along a track. Birds were also observed roosting in trees during a
night drive.

This species was resident around the Lagoon. The main concentration of
birds was at the NE end of the Lagoon near a small house. The highest count was
46 birds on February 18th .A few birds remained at the S end of the
Lagoon.

White-backed Stilt (Himantopus mexicanus melanurus)
There were seven sightings of this species all of which were in flight over the lagoon. On March 19th a flock of 13 birds landed on a shallow pool along the SE area of the Lagoon.

On April 4th there was a single record of a single bird at the
S end of the Lagoon. The bird was flushed early morning along the stream by the small bridge near
to the Arroyito trail entrance. It was later re-located by Sean Gee and photographed by the
reed margins on the Beach. (KG/SG)

Grey-headed Gull (Larus cirrocephalus)
Yellow-billed Tern (Sternula superciliaris)
There were two sightings of this species on the Lagoon. Both sightings
followed days of stormy weather.
On April 3rd 2 birds were observed at 1.15pm in flight over
the NE reed bed edges on the Lagoon. (SS/KG)
On April 17th a single bird was observed in flight over the NE
edges of the Lagoon.

On April 17th during early morning 2 birds were observed

This species was resident on the reserve. On April 28th a
flock of 61 birds were seen in flight in the Cerrado.
Ruddy Ground-dove (Columbina talpacoti)
This species was resident on the reserve. On April 28th a
flock of 61 birds were seen in flight in the Cerrado.
Picui Ground-Dove (Columbina picui)
This species was resident on the reserve & more numerous in
residential areas.
Scaled Dove (Columbina squammata)
A pair of birds was resident around the Base & the tourist area of
the Lagoon.
White-tipped Dove (Leptotila verreaux)
This species was present on the reserve normally seen as a single bird. On March 18th 3 birds were seen in flight at Bridge 3.

White-Eyed Parakeet (Aratinga leucophthalma)
This species was resident in the Atlantic Forest. Flocks of birds were
typically seen at dawn & dusk commuting from feeding areas. The highest
count was on March 5th where circa 60 birds were seen in flight over
the Atlantic Forest.
Yellow-chevroned Parakeet (Brotogeris chiriri)
This species is resident on the reserve. A small flock was regularly seen
at the Base where birds where observed feeding off of termite nests. The
highest count was 21 birds seen in flight on March 6th over the
Cerrado.

Pileated Parrot (Pionopsitta pileata)
This species was rarely seen on the reserve. There were three sightings
in flight.
On February 20th 7 birds were seen in flight over the Atlantic
Forest.
On February 21st 6 birds were seen in flight over the Cerrado.
On April 26th 2 birds were seen in flight over Nightjar
Stream.
Scaly-headed Parrot (Pionus maximiliani)
This species is resident on the reserve, The highest count was 7 birds in
flight over Mboijagua trail on March 29th.
Blue-fronted Parrot (Amazona aestiva)
This species is resident on the reserve & was generally seen in
flight at dawn and dusk. The highest count was 14 birds seen in flight on April
26th over the Cerrado.
CUCULIDAE
- CUCKOOS
Yellow-billed Cuckoo (Coccyzus americanus)
This species is a passage migrant & was seen on March 31st
on the Lagoon edge. The bird was observed at dawn resting in a small tree
before being chased off by two Pale breasted Thrush.
This is the second record for Laguna Blanca.
Dark-billed Cuckoo (Coccyzus melacoryphus)
This species is a passage migrant. On March 1st a single bird
was photographed near the entrance to the Urukurea trail by the Lagoon. (KG)
Squirrel Cuckoo (Piaya cayana)
On April 5th a single bird was observed feeding inside a Plantation opposite Nightjar Land. (SS/KG)
This species is resident on the reserve and was infrequently seen in the Atlantic Forest. The highest count was 2 birds on March 27th seen from the Kurupayty trail.
Striped Cuckoo (Tapera naevia)

On April 5th a single bird was observed feeding inside a Plantation opposite Nightjar Land. (SS/KG)
Smooth-billed Ani (Crotophaga ani)
This species is resident on the reserve. Family groups were regularly
seen around the Lagoon edges. The highest count was 13 birds on April 7th
at the Base.
Guira Cuckoo (Guira guira)
This species was resident on the reserve. A group of up to 9 birds were
seen at the Base feeding on the ground following storms. The highest count was 19 birds on March 28th
on Nightjar Land.

Tropical Screech-owl (Megascops choliba)
This species is resident on the reserve. A single bird was a frequent
visitor to the Base at night particularly when the moth light was situated
within the confines of the Base or the entrance to the Mbopi trail. The bird
remained until dawn on occasions.

Ferruginous Pygmy-owl (Glaucidium brasilianum)
This species is resident on the reserve. There were four sightings of
this species during daylight hours in the Atlantic Forest all were in response
to the playing of a tape.
Burrowing Owl (Athene cunicularia)
This species is resident and breeds on the reserve preferring Cerrado
habitats. Birds were seen during daylight hours at nest sites & were
numerous at night. The highest count was10 birds on March 2nd during
a night drive in the Cerrado.
CAPRIMULGIDAE

Nacunda Nighthawk (Chordeiles nacunda)
On April 18th a single bird was seen at dusk in the Cerrado
being chased by an Aplomado Falcon. (KG/SS)
Pauraque (Nyctidromus albicollis)
This species was rarely seen on the reserve. Sightings were generally
after dark.
On March 23rd a single bird was photographed at the S beach
end of the lagoon.
On March 24th a single bird was seen on Nightjar land.
On April 18th a single bird was flushed from a trail in the
Cerrado two hours before dusk.
Little Nightjar (Caprimulgus parvulus)
(21/03)
This species was seen after dark along tracks in the Cerrado & the
Lagoon. A single bird was present in the S Beach area of the Lagoon & a
single bird was located in the Cerrado near the entrance to the Mbopi trail.
Scissor-tailed Nightjar (Hydropsalis torquata)
On February 10th a male was flushed from a track in the
Cerrado. This was the only bird located during the period despite several
attempts to locate this species.
White-winged Nightjar (Caprimulgus candicans)
This species is critically endangered throughout the World. Laguna Blanca
is one of three sights that still has a breeding population. Mbaracayu Paraguay
& Emap NP in Brazil are the other sites that this bird is still present.
Birds were present on Nightjar land & were only seen after dark. The
highest count was circa 15 birds on March 2nd. Numbers decreased
significantly as March progressed.

On March 28th a single bird was seen near the stream by the horse
paddock along the Arroyito trail.

Nightjar land.
