A huge thank you to Karina, Joe, Becca and Jorge at Para La Tierra for accommodating and assisting me with this project. Paul Smith Zoologist Fauna Paraguay for assisting with completion of this report, his birding expertise and identification of species. To all my friends who kept me on my toes with sightings at Laguna Blanca San Pedro Dept Paraguay.

Introduction

Reserva Naturalista Laguna Blanca, San Pedro Department, Paraguay is situated at the point where three important ecosystems meet (Upper Parana Atlantic Forest, Cerrado and Bosque Central of Paraguay). This is considered by experts as the only area in Paraguay to have a natural lake which is spring fed.

The McKinnon method (McKinnon and Phillips 1993) measures the relative abundance and species richness of an area. The method involves the creation of fixed length lists each species that is seen or heard appearing once on a list of up to twenty species. Once the first list is complete then the next list begins and can contain species recorded in the previous list providing the individuals seen have not already been counted.

A specific plot is not required but field data should be recorded (habitat, weather). There is no time limit on completing the lists therefore time can be spent looking for more elusive species. Species are recorded if they are using the area which is being surveyed. eg. Vulture searching for carcases

Ten lists are recommended for analysis. The number of new species decreases as the number of lists increase.  When new species recorded reaches a plateau then it is considered that the area has been adequately sampled.

The relative abundance is measured from the number of lists each species appears in.
The overall species richness (SR) can be measured as follows:-
SR = S + N/ (2 x P)
Where  S = number of species observed, N = number of species observed only once and P = number of species observed twice.

Method

Laguna Blanca Reserve San Pedro Department Paraguay was chosen as the study area. The reserve was divided into four areas Atlantic Forest, Cerrado, Lagoon and environs, and Transitional Forest which covered the habitat types on the reserve.
A count from each area was taken once a week with a five day period between each count in a habitat type. Due to high temperatures and the size of each area counts were confined to the morning and afternoon/evening. This allowed the opportunity to record night species without the risk of double counting birds if a whole day count was taken.

Areas Surveyed

Atlantic Forest
A single stretch of forest runs along the SE of the reserve behind the beach and living accommodation.
The North forest has various trails including Urukurea which is a tourist trail. The Kurupayty trail leads through areas of central and South forest.  The central forest is divided by a dirt road which leads out of the reserve. The South forest begins beyond a pair of gates and has trails some of which were overgrown.

Cerrado
This was by far the largest area on the reserve 400 ha (P.Smith 2012) and is divided into four habitat types:-
Campo limpio: Grassland and small shrubs
Campo sucio: Grassland with medium shrubs
Sensu Strictu: Trees and shrubs with ground plants
Cerradon: Tall trees

This area had a disused airfield at the W side of the lagoon which divided the areas of Transitional forest. A sand track ran to the top of the airfield then divided two ways which led to the edge of the reserve.

Lagoon and environs
The lake is spring fed and covers 147 ha. Para La Tierra’s field site base is situated in the SW corner and accommodation and a tourist beach area is situated along the S most end of the lake.
The field site base and the accommodation blocks were included in this study area.

Transitional Forest
This area of forest was situated along the W side of the Lagoon and Mbopi trail, behind the field site base which was accessible via the Arroyito trail. The Mboijaguar trail dissected the Cerrado and the Transitional forest leading directly through the forest at the NE end of the lagoon.

Systematic List March and April 2014

The following covers all species seen during my visit to Laguna Blanca. Some species were seen outside of McMillan survey days and others on land which was not included in the surveys due to locality and having regular access. An abundance rating is not shown for these species but a high count and date of such is included.

McMillan Abundance Rating Key:
C = Common (recorded in over 60% of lists)
U = Uncommon (recorded in over 20% and under 60% of lists)
R = Rare (recorded in under 20% of lists)
1 = Single record (Very rare species for reserve).
-  = Not recorded during a survey day.
