This area contains an old fort which featured in the Chaco War with derelict bunkers and trenches. A small number of Chacoan Peccary are kept at the site sponsored by San Diego Zoo these animals were thought to be extinct until 1975. I decided to have a little wander around and jammed into a pair of Cream-backed Woodpeckers only problem was Keith and Paul were at the accommodation area relaxing. A bit of arm waving and subtle jumping around took a while to get their attention. The birds remained for a good few minutes but by the time Keith had got to me both had moved off and were not relocated.

It was time to leave this area but first two specials Quebracho Crested Tinamou and Black-legged Seriema had been regularly heard in the mornings so this was the target bird along the road. The Tinamou was the first to show scuttling across the road. Kieth had seen BL Seriema flying over the accommodation a day earlier. Unfortunately I was sitting facing the wrong way when the “Flip” shout went out. I have learnt this is something good from previous experiences. Fortunately the group had good views of this bird along the road...One that didn’t get away!

A drive through a check point and to the area where the ex president of TAM airlines had his house prior to him coming to a sticky end in a light aircraft crash. The derelict building is now occupied by the Indigenous people. The group were in search of a Paraguay special the Spot-winged Falconet which was no-where to be seen. But two Black chested Buzzard-eagles did make an appearance.

154 Chalk-browed Mockingbird (Mimus saturninus)
153 Black-chested Buzzard-eagle (Geranoaetus melanoleucus)

Enciso National Park 09/02/2012
An early start resulted in a stake out for the Crested Gallito a special for Paraguay. This bird had been heard several times since our arrival. So it was into the bush to lie low and wait for the bird to show. A bonus of two birds both calling each other and the group positioned itself in the middle. They are fast movers so concentration was at a premium then bingo!

A pair of Chaco Owl ventured into the compound most nights. An early start bagged Nacunda Nighthawk and flying over the disused airfield a pair of Comb duck were seen. This was the first record of this species in this area. A Tapir track was found on a path to the waterhole on top of one of our footprints. Sadly the group was unable to locate the animal.

This area is dry Chaco with a waterhole a short walk away from the accommodation block. Many of the paths were used by soldiers in the Chaco war. There were trenches and bunkers still present off the path. A dirt road passed through the area with a disused airfield beyond the tree scrub line. These areas were to be the focus of our attentions for the next few days.

On the way to Enciso the truck was traversing a rough piece of road when Keith exclaimed!! The truck came to a halt and he in a very excited voice said “Puma”. The cat had been seen in an opening off the road the truck returned to the point but sadly the cat had moved on. This was to be the only sighting during the trip but a marvellous sighting all the same. O to have been on the other side of the truck...such is life!
